CalFresh for IHSS Workers in California: Eligibility Guide
CalFresh — California's version of the federal SNAP food assistance program — helps millions of working Californians afford groceries. Many IHSS providers qualify and do not know it.
Can IHSS Providers Get CalFresh?
Yes. CalFresh is available to working adults, including IHSS providers. Your IHSS wages count as earned income for CalFresh purposes. Whether you qualify depends on your income and household size.
Income Limits for CalFresh (2025)
California uses expanded income limits — households with gross income up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) may qualify. Here are examples:
| Household Size | Gross Monthly Income Limit (200% FPL) | |---|---| | 1 person | ~$2,511/month | | 2 people | ~$3,407/month | | 3 people | ~$4,303/month | | 4 people | ~$5,200/month |
An IHSS provider working 20 hours/week at $18.65/hour earns about $1,492/month before taxes — well under the limit for a single person.
Does Your IHSS Income Count?
Yes — IHSS wages count as earned income. However, California also has a 20% earned income deduction, which means only 80% of your gross IHSS earnings count toward CalFresh income calculations. This improves your eligibility.
There is a special exception: live-in IHSS providers who are also the parent or spouse of the recipient may have their IHSS income excluded entirely from SSI calculations (not CalFresh). For CalFresh, IHSS wages are generally included as earned income.
